An Imaging Survey for Extrasolar Planets around 45 Close, Young Stars with SDI at the VLT and MMT

چکیده
We present the results of a survey of 45 young (.250 Myr), close (.50 pc) stars with the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) implemented at the VLT and the MMT for the direct detection of extrasolar planets. As part of the survey, we observed 54 objects total, of which 45 were close, young stars, 2 were somewhat more distant (<150 pc), very young (≤10 Myr) stars, 3 were stars with known radial velocity planets, and 4 were older, very nearby (≤20 pc) solar analogues. Our SDI devices use a double Wollaston prism and a quad filter to take images simultaneously at 3 wavelengths surrounding the 1.62 μm methane absorption bandhead found in the spectrum of cool brown dwarfs and gas giant planets. By performing a difference of adaptive optics corrected images in these filters, speckle noise from the primary star can be significantly attenuated, resulting in photon (and flat-field) noise limited data. In our VLT data, we achieved H band contrasts & 10 mag (5σ) at a separation of 0.5” from the primary star on 45% of our targets and H band contrasts of & 9 mag at a separation of 0.5” on based on observations made with the MMT and the ESO VLT at Paranal Observatory under programme ID’s 074.C-0548, 074.C-0549, and 076.C-0094

A Survey of Close, Young Stars with the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) at the VLT and MMT
We discuss the preliminary results of a survey of young (<300 Myr), close (<50 pc) stars with the Simultaneous Differential Extrasolar Planet Imager (SDI) implemented at the VLT and the MMT. SDI uses a double Wollaston prism and a quad filter to take 4 identical images simultaneously at 3 wavelengths surrounding the 1.62 μm methane bandhead found in the spectrum of cool brown dwarfs and gas gia...
متن کاملConstraints on Extrasolar Planet Populations from VLT NACO/SDI and MMT SDI and Direct Adaptive Optics Imaging Surveys: Giant Planets are Rare at Large Separations
We examine the implications for the distribution of extrasolar planets based on the null results from two of the largest direct imaging surveys published to date. Combining the measured contrast curves from 23 of the stars observed with the VLT NACO adaptive optics system by Masciadri et al. (2005), and 47 of the stars observed with the VLT NACO SDI and MMT SDI devices by Biller et al. (2007) (...

متن کاملA novel L - band imaging search for giant planets in the Tucana and β Pictoris moving groups ?
Context. Direct imaging using various techniques for suppressing the stellar halo nowadays achieves the contrast levels required to detect and characterize light of substellar companions at orbital distances larger than a few astronomical units from their host stars. The method nicely complements the radial velocity surveys that provide evidence that giant extrasolar planets in close-in orbits ...
متن کاملSearch for Giant Planets around White Dwarfs with HST , Spitzer , and VLT
For the last three years we have performed a survey for young (< 3 Gyrs) giant planets around nearby white dwarfs with HST, Spitzer, and VLT. Direct HST/NICMOS imaging of the seven white dwarfs in the Hyades gave no evidence for companions down to about 10 Jupiter masses and separations larger than 0.5 arcsec (∼ 25 AU), while VLT/NACO observations revealed a putative companion to a field white ...
